HRSA heading to East London

Gauteng’s Historic Racers are off to East London for Historic Racing South Africa’s away racing weekend at the iconic East London Grand Prix Circuit Saturday 3 August. The Sports & GT, Universal Health Care Historic Racing Saloons and Charlies Superspar Pursuit classes are set to race a couple of heats each, before coming together for a 1 Hour Endurance Race together against the local Border Historic racers.

Pre-90 Sports & GT action will see a Porsche versus Chevron battle as the likes of Richard Pott, Richard de Roos and Stefan Puschavez’ Porsche 911 RSR GT racers taking on classic sportscar duo Peter Jenkins and Colin Ellison in a pair of Chevrons. Championship leader Stefan Snyders will be out to maintain his title advantage over the similar Porsches of Peter Bailey, Pott and Rui Campos.

The Pre-1980 Universal Health Care Historic Racing Saloon races promise a most interesting tussle, both on track and in the championship chase, where Fanie Kloppers and his Mercedes holds a slender five point lead over Sean Hepburn’s Datsun and Andre ten Napel’s Volkswagen Scirocco, with Hubi Von Moltke’s Mercedes and Alan Green, Johann van der Walt and Rene van Rensburg’s Ford Escorts a little further behind but all of them split by just three championship points.

So, with a few local entries, including Derek Boy’s Ford Capri Perana, Gudmanz clan Alec and Darron in a pair of Capri Peranas and Matthew (Mazda Capella), along with regular HRSA drivers, Colin Ellison’s Ford Fury, Richard Pott and Jan Jacobs, Daniel Lotter’s Ford Escort and Rob Clark’s Citroen GS Club, Border race fans can expect some close competition to evoke beautiful racing memories of days gone by.

The Charlies Superspar Pursuit gang will race in their usual handicap format, with the slowest car starting first and the fastest last, and all cars scheduled to cross the iconic beachside GP Circuit’s finish line at the same time. Werner Hartzenberg comfortably leads that championship in his Porsche 928S, but it’s close behind between Althea Pretorius’ Porsche 924, Rob Clark (Citroen GS), Mercedes Benz 190E duo Richard Tudor-Owen and Andre Hattingh and Kola de Klerk’s Nissan 300ZX. Add Henk De Klerk’s Honda Civic, Nadine Von Moltke (Mercedes) and Harm Beens (Escort) for good effect.

A one-hour Historic Endurance Race will see old-timer all-comers taking to the track, including Jenkins and Ellison’s Chevrons, the Pott, de Roos and Puschavez Porsche RSRs, Jacobs’ Alfa Romeo, von Moltke’s Mercedes and others, as well as a good few local Border Historics to spice it all up. The Historic races will contribute to a bumper East London 3 August race program including all the regular local classes and the fourth round of the 2019 SA Endurance Series at the Grand Prix Circuit.
